Math 415 Fall 2024

This is a temporary page where I will upload various course materials. Hopefully, eventually canvas will be available, at which point we will migrate everything to canvas.

Syllabus

Office hours: Wednesdays 12:10pm to 1:10pm, or by appointment.

The textbook will be Gilbert Strang’s “Linear algebra and its applications”, 4th edition. If you buy it, I would try to look for a used copy. One may also be able to acquire a pdf of the somehow.

Lecture notes:
Matrices and elimination, weeks 1-2 (The material here roughly corresponds to sections 1.1-1.7 in the textbook)

The lecture notes and the physical lectures will cover roughly the same content, possibly presented in slightly different ways. The textbook contains all this content, though its presentation will also be slightly different. On the one hand, this is an asset — you get to see the same material from multiple perspectives. On the other hand, it can be confusing. If you find any discrepancies/contradictions between what is presented in one source vs another, please come talk to me! Ultimately, you are responsible for what is covered in the physical lectures.

Practice problems:
Additional Problems

These are ungraded problems you can think about as the course progresses. I would be very happy to discuss them with you in office hours. Some of the problems won’t make sense until later in the course. For more practice, in addition to webassign, you can also work on some of the problems at the end of each chapter in the textbook. The odd numbered problems have solutions in the back.
